Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to challenge particular calls made by the official, following the system already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
