We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your partner and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together resides a deep contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.
An Introductory Film Investigating Relationship Dynamics
Together marks the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot begins when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While hiking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes well past simple connection.
The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) body horror, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career gradually emerges.
Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He fears the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes one partner or the other the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie face the sort of issues that are inherent in long-term unions after ten years. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They share moments of joy, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their future together.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the metaphor does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other symbiotically.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s final act, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.
Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu at present.
