One Piece Ends a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a revised release plan for One Piece, which has run continuously for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will take a three-month hiatus until spring, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

From now on, the series will produce two seasons every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio states this will enable the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the source material.” Yet, producers conclude by hinting at “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime previously took a six-month pause that started in October 2024 and ended in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the visuals and allow the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has been able to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, superior graphics, and reduced non-canon content than previously.

Adopting Modern Trends

Although a few summary installments appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in one episode of the anime adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling more material or more to make up for time.

This concludes of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and of course itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can change drastically between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with a couple at most coming out each year, enabling improved visuals and more faithfulness to the source material.
