The UK and US have reached a major commercial pact that will guarantee no import taxes on British drug exports being sold in the US market.

Key Provisions of the Pact

Under the terms of the agreement, the UK has agreed to increase expenditure on medicines through the NHS. This move guarantees that tariffs on these crucial goods will be held at nothing for a duration of three years.

This agreement is in response to earlier statements to hike duties on branded pharmaceutical products, with increases floated as high as one hundred percent.

"This deal with the UK reinforces the international landscape for cutting-edge drugs and establishes long-overdue fairness to U.S.–U.K. pharmaceutical trade," a release said.

Trade Significance

Drugs are one of the UK's most significant exports to the America, which is easily the primary destination for major UK drugmakers.

Statistics show that in the one-year period prior to last September, the UK shipped pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This value made up 17.4% of British export trade in that period.

"This guarantee safeguards jobs, boosts capital expenditure and sets the stage for the UK to establish itself as a international leader for biotech and pharma," the Business and Trade Secretary stated.

Key UK Commitments

The pact includes several notable pledges from the British government:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will raise the price threshold at which it judges new medicines to be prohibitively costly by 25%.
  • Higher Drug Budget: There is a aim to raise overall public funding on drugs from 0.3% of Gross Domestic Product to 0.6 percent over the following ten-year period.
  • Rebate Cap: The amount pharmaceutical firms must pay back to the NHS to control costs will be restricted at fifteen percent. In the past, rebates topped twenty percent.

Recent Tensions

The pact follows a protracted tension between the drug companies and the ministers over spending levels and regulatory access.

This friction were exacerbated by claims that US consumers were paying a premium for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

Recently, several significant manufacturing plans in the UK have been delayed or abandoned, while substantial funding commitments have been announced toward American operations.

A senior figure publicly accepted that the NHS needed to increase expenditure on drugs, noting that its spending on drugs had declined as a proportion of its total funding over the past decade.
